Did You Know?![]() Many people who visit the GNBCHC are surprised by the size of our facilities as well as the scope and quality of care that our patients receive. Some have a preconceived notion that we are "just a walk-in clinic" or only treat the poor and indigent. The facts and figures on this page may surprise you, and we invite you to visit us and learn for yourself about the GNBCHC. Did you know?... That every GNBCHC physician is board certified or board eligible? The GNBCHC is proud of the high quality care available to our patients. We follow closely the American Medical Association's recommendations for preventive health screenings and treatments. Each Health Center doctor is board certified and/or board eligible, and all Adult Medicine and Pediatric physicians are on staff at St. Luke's Hospital so they can continue to care for our patients who must be hospitalized. That many GNBCHC patients are working men and women? It's true - many of the patients seen at the Health Center are employed locally. They work for small or privately owned businesses that cannot afford to provide health insurance for their employees. They are dockworkers, fishermen, waiters, waitresses, self-employed, or students - these are just some of the people who rely on the GNBCHC for their health care.
That the
GNBCHC contributes to the fiscal health of New Bedford? The Health Center is one of downtown's largest employers. Health Center employees and patients eat in the restaurants, shop in the stores, and purchase good and services downtown. In fact, it is estimated that the GNBCHC contributes $14 - $15 million back into the New Bedford economy each year in goods, services, and taxes! That visits to the GNBCHC and continuous primary care save money? One of the Health Center's primary goals is the reduction of episodic care and the increase of continuous primary care for our patients. This is not only better for patient health, but costs less. A visit to the GNBCHC and regular primary care decreases episodic care and the need for ER visits. Community health centers save money!
